Step 1 of 3: Equipment
Rain falls past green maple branches bent by wind above the metal gutter and roof edge of a red brick building under an overcast sky.

Sizing a mini-split for a Greene County home starts with what the local climate actually demands, and that question has a specific answer here. 123 severe weather events were recorded in Greene County, Pennsylvania between 2015 and 2024. At that rate, a contractor factors sustained weather stress into how they select and position equipment, because a unit undersized for the real load runs harder than it was built to and loses efficiency before its time. A quote that skips that step will produce a system that fits the catalog but not the house.

The electrical panel in much of Greene County's housing was sized for a world without mini-splits. Half the homes in Greene County, Pennsylvania were built in 1960 or earlier (2020-2024 ACS 5-year). A ductless system draws power differently than the resistive or window-unit setups that were standard when those houses were wired, and the gap between what a panel was built to carry and what a new unit requires is where installation planning starts. A contractor will open the panel before pricing anything else.

What Gets Installed With a New Mini-split

Isometric cutaway illustration of a two-room house showing two wall-mounted indoor air conditioning units connected by line sets to an outdoor condenser unit on the ground outside.

The indoor air handler mounts high on an interior wall inside the room being conditioned, where it draws in room air and delivers treated air back out. The outdoor condenser unit sits on a pad or bracket outside the house and holds the compressor and fan that do the system's main mechanical work.

A refrigerant line set runs through a small opening in the wall to connect the two units, bundled alongside a condensate drain line that carries moisture out of the indoor unit. A dedicated electrical disconnect box gets mounted near the outdoor unit as part of the same installation.

The drawing shows the general layout of a mini-split system, and a licensed contractor determines exactly how each piece is positioned and routed in your home.

Licensing and Legal Requirements in Greene County, Pennsylvania

Pennsylvania names the trade in its own definition: installing central heating or air conditioning is a home improvement under the Act, whether or not the equipment is affixed — so an HVAC installation is work the registration requirement reaches.

A Pennsylvania registration displaces the local one: no political subdivision may require a home improvement contractor to register, license or pay a fee on top of it, though building permits and local code enforcement still apply.
